On Site BS Weld Testing

Operator testing to Mig Welding BS4872 Pt1 & Spot Welding BS1140

Most Car Manufacturing programmes, trade associations, and insurance companies require BS Accreditations as part of their standards when repairing vehicles. Therefore each operator / technician needs to have a BS Weld Certificate for Spot and Mig Welding of Steels.

There are many reasons for this, just a few examples are:

Is the operator a competent welder?
Is the operator familiar with the equipment he uses?
Is the operator sure the machine is functioning correctly?
Is the operator aware of HSE to welding?

If a weld fails on a repair job, who is responsible?

Is it the operator?
Is it the preparation?
Is the welder in a suitable working condition? Inc, Welding Tips, Power, Etc.

If there was a liable case how, do you the employer prove you have a qualified operator?
What are your best endeavours as an employer?

Welder approval training and testing to BS 4872 Pt1 (Mig Welding) and BS 1140 (Spot Welding), is a standard currently being used by the Accident Repair Trade.

The panel beater will be tested on site by our examiner, whom will be looking at technique and the end result, the metal coupon. This test does not require a third party witness.

There are two thickness ranges within the BS4872 Pt1 Mig Welding Testing:
Testing on 1.0mm Steel covers certification for 0.75mm to 1.5mm Steel Thickness Range.
Testing on 2.0mm Steel covers certification for 1.5mm to 3.0mm Steel Thickness Range.

All persons should be tested at a minimum using the 1.0mm Steel. Please check with the car manufacturer, if the operators are required to be tested on the 2.0mm Steel as well as the 1.0mm.

Certificates will be issued to the body shop for each individual whom passes.
This testing is valid for up to 2 years.
